Update! The Project Silence Podcast WILL return!
Folks, I know it’s been a long, long time (about half the year!) since Jay and I sat down to BS about what we’ve watched, played and generally “nerded” out about, but I promise you all, this weekend will see the RETURN of the Project Silence Podcast! Jay and I will do our annual year-end podcast where we discuss our favorites (and least favorites!) of the year.
Netflix Not a “NEW” DVD Rental Company…
I’ve been a Netflix user almost from the very start. My account is about six or seven years old now (with some brief pauses in service) and I’m here to tell you that I’m about done with it all.
For some time, it’s been my understanding with Netflix that if I want to get a new relase movie on DVD or Blu-Ray, I need to strategically send the current disc I have back to the warehouse to coincide with the date of the new release. Usually if I send the movie in on a Saturday, they’ll get it by Monday and send me the new movie that is scheduled to release the next day on Tuesday. However, for well over 2 months now I have habitually been sending old, unwatched titles they’ve sent me back on these days (just like I always used to) only to get a movie that was number 5 or 6 down on my Que instead of the new release I wanted.
Disney to Acquire Marvel Comics for $4 Billion
I know comics-related news usually fall under “Etta’s” domain, but this was just too huge for me to ignore. According to this post over at Newsarama.com, Disney enterainment will acquire Marvel Comics Entertainment and all of its over 2,000 comic book characters (including Spider-Man, the X-Men, the Hulk, Iron Man, Captain America, etc.) in a large stock and cash transaction.
“I saw his once and I swear to God, it was THIS big…”
Clinton and Obama: the bread in a turd sandwhich.
No disrespect to Senator Kennedy, but this picture from CNN of the last 3 presidents together at his funeral today was too good to pass up. Rest in peace, Teddy.
“Funny People” Movie Review
In “Funny People”, popular director Judd Apatow begins his movie by reminding us just how truly hysterical and inspired Sandler once was. Using old home video he shot when he and Sandler were roommates years ago, we are treated to the “old school” Sandler who used to make people laugh so hard they would get the hiccups. Unfortunately, this is the high point of the movie.
“Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” Movie Review
As a dedicated fan of both this movie franchise and the books they are based on, I must admit that watching Harry go to school, interact with the same people and do homework again has become a bit blasé. With the material that the filmmakers had to work with and the rare foreknowledge of how this tale will end (given that the final book has been out for a few years now), I really think they dropped the ball here. They do stray a few times from the original source material, but the results are a mixed bag. Key scenes that were written in the book to explain Voldemort’s origins and set up the finale were curiously omitted while original scenes that really did nothing to further the plot along were added in. In fact, a couple of the new things that this movie added in are contradictory to what will have to happen in the next movie!
“Bruno” Movie Review (a bit late, I know…)
This movie does have it’s funny moments to be sure, but after a while they become a little repetitive and predictable. The plot really slows to a near halt in the last 20 minutes and from there you’re just waiting for it to be over.
Sacha Baron Cohen has proven himself to be a virtual wunderkind when it comes to comedy. This movie felt flat, rushed and undeserving of his talent. Here’s hoping that he learned enough from this film to make a more deserving follow up.
“Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” Movie Review
This weekend, I took one for the team. Am I a hero? No. Am I a saint? No. What I am, though, is now partially deaf after having been both visually and audibly attacked by “director” Michael Bay’s latest abortion, “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen”.
I realize that those are strong words, but let me explain myself: I’m one of the few people I know that will admit to having enjoyed the first “Transformers” movie a couple of years ago. I went into it expecting to be entertained by giant fighting robots and I was not disappointed. When I heard that a sequel was on the horizon I thought, “yeah! More, even bigger robots fighting!”.
Be careful what you wish for.
Terminator: Salvation Movie Review
I can’t believe that I’m saying this, but I liked this movie.
When I first read that McG (the guy responsible for the dreadful “Charlie’s Angels” flicks) was going to direct the next “Terminator” sequel, I think I said “eh”, shrugged my shoulders and decided that this franchise was finally dead. I mean, after the abysmal “Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines”, I think most people had given up on this series. Following the Hollywood trend that after at least 2 good movies (ala “Spider-Man”, “X-Men” and “Superman”), the rest must be crap.
