10 Things That Need to Happen in the Arrested Development Movie

    By Jason Walter | March 8, 2008

After we discussed a list of 8 things that need to be in the Arrested Development movie on the last Project Silence Podcast, I decided I could do better, much better, here’s my list of 10 things (that’s 2 better people!) that need to appear/happen in the most important film in the history of cinema:

    10. The stair car needs to return. This monster of a vehicle is basically the Bluth’s Batmobile and always lends itself to clever little side gags about “hops-ons” and it’s terrible braking system. The Bluths need to travel from point “A” to point “B” and this is the way to do it.

stansitwell.jpg9. The family needs to regain the Bluth company from Stan Sitwell (who bought it from Lucille Bluth in the final episode for 12% over market value). The Bluth matriarch realizes her mistake (with the classic line, of course!) and decides to sabotage Sitwell’s acquisition. I was thinking that Stan’s famous Alapecia could play into it, too. Maybe he goes to put on his “Power eyebrows” for the take over and, tragically, realizes that they are instead Hairy, poisonous South American Caterpillars. It would be a great short cameo for Ed Begley jr.!

    8. The resolution of the George Michael/Maebe taboo romance. Now that they know they’re not actual cousins, this plot line has run its course, but that’s not to say they couldn’t have a small scene to resolve this in some funny reunion scene between the two where they realize that the whole thing was only exciting because it was so wrong.

gobbananastand.jpg7. The Banana Stand, the model home, Lucille’s condo and the Bluth Company offices all need to be returning sets. These locations were used so many times, they might as well be part of the cast (which brings me too….)

    6. Ron Howard needs to continue his role as narrator. His dry, matter-of-fact commentary was a staple of the series and I can’t imagine a tale of the Bluth clan without it.

    5. The ENTIRE original cast needs to return. Not one single actor in this troop is replaceable and if they couldn’t get them all to reprise their roles, then they shouldn’t bother to make the movie.

    4. They need to leave room for a few returning (and maybe new) cameos. Some of the most famous and funny actors of our time showed up on “A.D.” from time to time and hopefully the draw of a larger production of a movie might attract some even larger stars. Personally, I’d love to see the family get a new attorney played by an-oscar calibre actor in a comedic role. Previously, Charlize Theron and Ben Stiller (neither of which are known for their comedic acting!) turned in very funny performances just by appearing on this show. Maybe a George Clooney or John Malkovich would be interested in expanding their resumes?

tobiastheblueman.jpg3. The Tobias/Lindsay marriage needs to hit new lows. I think it would be great to have them actually get divorced, but then they refuse to tell their daughter for fear of it hurting her so they pretend to still be together. This could lend itself to all sorts of great situations with Lindsay sneaking around with other guys in the house and Tobias doing the same (heh, heh).

    2. Gob Bluth needs to do a magic show at some point. Yes, it’s a minor thing, but I still can’t help myself from laughing out loud whenever I hear Europe’s “Final Countdown” being played. Will Arnett’s stage antics are hilarious and the guy is one of the most truly gifted comedic actors of our time.

    1. Return the original dynamic of the show with Michael Bluth trying to keep the family afloat despite its many flaws, legal problems and selfish acts. Have Lucille Bluth now be the parent in prison after the revelations about her in the final episode and have George Bluth be the one at home criticizing his children and trying to run their lives. Jeffrey Tambor and Jessica Walter gave legendary performances as the Bluth parents and I defy you to find two funnier actors their age working today.

I thought long and hard about this so I hope that maybe some Hollywood suit will take notice and possibly get some inspiration. If so, I’m glad to do my part to continue the tale of the funniest show to ever be on TV!

Wow, great post. I espically like the idea of Jeffrey Tambor outside prison, interacting more with the family, that’s comedy gold waiting to happen.

Also, I want to see the surrogate return.

I’d like everyone to notice that this is Jason’s (of Project Silence Podcast fame) first of (hopefully) many written contributions to Project Silence. Great work!
