The “Tonight Show” is Great…FOR ME TO POOP ON!!!

Well, it’s offical now. Conan O’Brien will leave NBC and the Tonight Show this Friday after just 7 months on the job. The Good news? He can be back on the air on another network after September 1st. The bad (terrible) news? Triumph the Insult Comic Dog is owned by NBC Universal and Conan cannot use him in sketches anymore after he leaves. This, more than just about anything else out of all this crap has made me as mad as hell. Seriously, what is this world coming to? After this and the stupid Senate seat in Massachusetts going to a Playgirl pinup, 2010 has a big ol’ “SUCK” written all over it. The only late night television I have watched for the past 15 years has been Conan. After Dave switched networks in the early 90’s, he started to get grumpy and not funny anymore (I guess that just comes with age for some people), so my friends and I all started to watch Conan. After a while (maybe around 6 months or so?), we realized he was about the funniest thing on TV. Personally, I cannot imagine a late night landscape without Mr. O’Brien in it. Here’s hoping that Conan finds another network soon and crushes Leno beneath his giant, pale foot.

Conan is a FOX, he’ll land on his feet.
The thing that really worries me, is will Andy be up for the move? I love Conan, he’s THE late night genius of our time, but Conan+Andy=Stuff of the comedy gods. It’s been so great to have those two back together again (even if only for just 7 months) that’s it’s hard to imagine Conan’s next move without Andy.
I would love to see Conan head over to another network and put Leno’s ratings in the dirt. Conan’s fans have made The Tonight Show ratings amazing the last few weeks, while Leno’s show has just continued on it’s shitty path, BECAUSE HE HAS NO FANS.
Also, Letterman has been on fire the last few weeks, Monday night he absolutely destroyed Leno, it’s really fun to watch a Letterman who is interested in the things he is talking about. Let’s hope he kicks Leno’s ass as well.
Let’s be honest, I know Conan puts a lot of love into The Tonight Show brand, but it’s just a brand. Honestly, for 17 years (minus the last 7 months), it’s been total garbage. A whole generation of people (myself included) only remember it for being the show my Grandma thinks is funny. Conan is the draw, not The Tonight Show.
I TOTALLY agree with you. The Tonight Show is a brand name that was made the gold standard by Johnny Carson. For the last 17 years, though, Leno has made its name synonomous with crap and medicority. I mean seriously, this guys funniest “bits” are newspaper misspellings and talking to stupid Californians!
I also agree with you about Letterman. When he actually cares about what he’s talking about (like he did during the elections and when he tore Bill O’ Reilly a new one!), he’s on fire and just like the Dave of old. The problem is those moments are few and far between.
Hopefully Andy will stick with Conan for his future endeavors. Seeing these two together again was like seeing Lennon and McCartney reunite (but that never happened!). I love Conan, I love Andy and I love Max. These are the 3 names people of our generation will talk about with the same adoration our grandparents talked about Carson, Mcmahon and Doc Severinson (but let’s be honest, Conan and co. are much funnier than those old farts!).
