A few weeks ago, I was fortunate enough to meet cartoonist Ryan Claytor as he took part in a signing tour across the United States and Canada. His stop brought him to Iowa, and to Alter Ego comics.

Not being familiar with Mr. Claytor, I immediately tried to learn more about him and his work. I visited his website, Elephanteater.com and learned more about the man and his work. What I found was a gifted cartoonist, one whose work seemed genuine, honest, and charming. After seeing some samples of his work, I made sure to go to his signing, meet him, and purchase some of his fine comics.

Meeting Ryan Claytor is just like reading one of his books; you’re immediately struck by his upbeat attitude and enthusiasm for the comic artform. He doesn’t come off jaded or rude, instead being very affable. We talked for a few minutes, and I learned a bit more about him and his work. I found a man who really believed in comics as art, one doing this not for a paycheck, but one whose need to create drove him to what he does. His use of comics as a scholarly pursuit seemed both unique and inspiring. I chose to purchase all of his books after our conversation, because creators like this are what make comics great and all of them deserve our support.

Now finally I’m through with reading all of them, and I must say, all were great. Claytor’s “And Then One Day” series is an all-ages read, something you could give to your girl-friend or wife, mother, little brother or sister, or even most die-hard superhero comic fan. In it’s simplest form, “And Then One Day” is a journal or Claytor’s life, giving insight on the man. But it’s slice of life tales aren’t cynical or bawdy, instead they showcase Claytor’s upbeat nature and hopefulness about life. His cartooning shows growth through the series, giving off an almost Tom Beland and Alex Robinson vibe in his latest project.

Speaking of that latest project (”And Then One Day #6/Autobiographical Documentary”), it was that book that really interested me not just in Claytor’s cartooning and life, but in the intent for the process behind the product. The point being the objectivity of documentary and the validity of autobiography. The whole book is devised of people in Claytor’s life answering questions written by Claytor about Claytor. The stories range from humorous to heartfelt, and you’re given a window into him that either autobiography or documentaries sometime overlook. It’s concept and approach were original, and cemented just how talented he is. I eagerly await what comes next, and if this last project was any indicator, I’m in for a treat.
