The Ettatorial for the Week of 01-02-09

The first week of the new year brought a number of quality releases, and a pick of the week that’s a new pick for the Ettatorial.  So, without further ado, here we go with my pick of the week.

#1 is the first pick for 2009.  With the creative team from Criminal and Sleeper, is instantly something that brought itself to my attention.  With Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips putting Criminal on hold while they do this mini-series, I advice any fans of theirs to check this title out.  Not just them of course, I whole-heartily advise everyone to check this out.  takes an interesting premise, that of a villain in witness protection choosing to act out almost as a  hero, and blends it with a pulp sensibility to create a compelling read.  The world Brubaker and Phillips create here is recognizable to fans of both pulp/noir and that of superheroes, and it’s seamless blending in itself is a beautiful thing to behold.  The protagnonist created in Zack “Overkill” Anderson is a character that is fleshed out, and one to both cheer for and slap and yell “what are you doing?!”.  Basically, Zack is a very noir-ish character, which I appreciate considering this is the creative team from Criminal.  It’s his role as a reluctant hero figure which will give fans of the superheroe genre something to consider and enjoy.  While it is a mature readers title, the book never feels gratuitous, and reads intelligently.  So while I may not advice it for younger readers, I do again recommend it for those mature enough to handle sex and violence.   I eagerly await the next issue of , and that is high enough praise to make me give it to you as pick of the week.

Well, there you are folks, your pick of the week.  Next week’s Ettatorial is looking a bit dicey at the moment, because I will be in Atlanta on business.   We’ll just see what pops up then.  So we’ll see you back here next week, same time, same channel.
