The Ettatorial for the Week of 1-09-08
By Etta | January 12, 2008
A medium sized week of releases for me, and that means a couple picks for this week. The first, Suicide Squad: Raise the Flag #5 is getting yet another nod from me for book of the week. The mini-series just seems to get whats right about comics, giving entertaining stories with good art month in, and month out. Fans of the old ‘Squad should be checking this out, as should fans of Checkmate, the Secret Six minis, and anyone tired of the whole Countdown as DC’s central spine story-telling approach. The other pick for the week is Mighty Avengers #7. Now that there’s an artist capable of getting an issue out at a timely pace (sorry Cho, but as nice as your art is, you never should have attempted to be on a book that’s central to Marvel’s upcoming crossover and thus necessary to be released when it’s scheduled), Mighty Avengers might actually start getting some love from me. With a story that’s actually pretty important to Secret Invasion, but also past tense in New Avengers, it will be interesting to see if this will be able to stay fresh and without having too much given away elsewhere. While that is a concern, having this be Mark Bagley’s last Marvel story is a nice touch, seeing as his efforts with Bendis have usually been outstanding. With a couple of cool moments (Stark’s reaction to Spider-Woman’s comments about nobody trusting him was spot on) and the potential to be a good action piece, the book’s symbiote story-line has potential. So there you have it, your picks for this week. We’ll see you back here next week for more.
