The Ettatorial for the Week of 1-27-10

daredevil+#504

A large week of releases this week, with a pretty average level of quality.  Honestly, nothing truly stood out, but my pick for the week had just enough that it got the nod.

Your pick for this week is #504.  Continuing the new direction the new creative team has cooked up, this issue pleasantly surprised me.  I feared that writer Andy Diggle might cop-out on the direction he has his title character heading, instead just using a swerve here and there to keep the cliff-hangers fresh.  Instead, he has acting and behaving in a very different way, and I find it to be working in favor of his first story.  His take of taking control of  an evil organization (the Hand in this case)  for good might not be totally unique (Agents of Atlas the most recent to come to mind), but it works in context of the character.  Now with the potential to showcase just how a good man and justice might become corrupt, has a new wrinkle to work out.  Definitely dark in tone, his story has found terrific collaborator in artist Roberto Del La Torre’s moody art.  With fine, scratchy pencils, I find myself seeing influences of Bill Seinkiewicz in the art, and that should be praise enough.  With a new feel to the status quo for the hero, has kept my interest even after such monumental runs on the book from Bendis and Maleev and Brubaker and Lark.

There you have it folks, your pick for the week.  I’ll see you back here next week, same time, same channel.
