The Ettatorial for the Week of 1-30-08

An odd week of releases for me, with not one, not two, but three different Avengers titles being released. I can’t remember that ever happening.  It also was eventful, with the new Captain America being officially introduced (but it sold out at my store, and I can’t include the review here) and the last issue of Y the Last Man (but since I buy that in trade form, no review-and nobody spoil it for me!).  Anyway, that leaves us with my pick of the week.  Avengers: The Initiative #9.  While it may surprise readers (especially Jay) that I didn’t pick either of the other Avengers titles as well, Avengers: The Initiative was head and shoulders above either of the other two (nothing wrong with them, just The New Avengers Annual was average with only one or two big twists, and Mighty Avengers storyline actually seeming padded to get to a totally different plot point).  Avengers: The Initiative #9 is again just a total Marvel fans’ dream.  Tons of characters from all over the Marvel spectrum, all of them handled beautifully, without letting continuity over or under reach the storyline.  I can’t highly recommend the title enough, as this is one of the books that will be remembered fondly in the future by comic fans.  Great writing by Slott and Gage, with gorgeous art by up and coming Stefano Caselli.  Just trust me, buy it and you won’t be sorry.
