The Ettatorial for the Week of 10-01-08

A very small week of releases this week makes this a very short Ettatorial. With only four books, and with the quality just at a good level, I decided to only pick one book. So without further ado, here we go.

The book picked this week is of America #25. For every couple of months that I debate the reason that I keep buying this book, a month like this one rolls around and confuses me. This issue redeems the title, and redeems my faith in Dwayne McDuffie as a writer. If knew what was good for the book’s quality, they’d leave crossing a title over with whatever event or crossover they had going at the time and let the man tell the stories he wants to tell. After some shaky issues over the last few months, this one feels more like something original in nature and like something McDuffie, and not editorial, wanted to tell. With an original villain (one whose mythological background makes for interesting stories by default) and a feel for the team that brings the late 1970s Avengers to mind, the book seems stronger. Add to that an art job done by a team of top-notch pencillers including Darrick Robertson, Doug Manke, Ivan Reis, and more, the book’s pencils have never looked better. It just goes to show that Ed Benes (who does do some of the interior work here) is the week link in the creative team for this book, and makes me wish for one of these talented pencillers take over the art chores.

So there you go folks, there is you pick of the week. We’ll see you back here next week, same time, same channel.
