The Ettatorial for the Week of 10-28-09

A fine week of releases this week, highlighted by two fine titles.  Without further ado, here we go.

First up this week is #2.  The finale to this mini-series goes out the way it came in, full of swagger and with an abundance of quality.  As I’ve stated on numerous occasions, this is a terrific and original series.  And now after reading the finale, I’m going to say it’s been my favorite mini-series of the year thus far, and up there with the best series of the year.  With it’s blend of Deadwood-esque western and smart sci-fi, this is exactly what those that complain that comics are just superheroes should be reading.  I would happily buy this as an on-going, and after reading how the story ended, can see that actually happening.

Your other pick this week is #858.  The second arc of Rucka and Williams III Batwoman starts here, and it’s just as great as it’s predecessor.  Williams once again showcases why he is one of the best artists currently working today, as he changes his style three different times this issue, each one fitting what the story demands, and each showcasing Williams’ artistic brilliance.  This arc is set to tell the origin of Batwoman, and after reading part one, it’s easy to say that this is not your typical superhero origin.  Rucka’s gift with writing believable females continues here, continuing what he had with Queen and Country.  Just a perfect book on all fronts, DC needs to make this book one of it’s examples to it’s editors on how to do a book right.

That’s it for this week folks, we’ll see you back here next week, same time, same channel.
