The Ettatorial for the Week of 10-29-08

Another week of big releases, with my count of issues at seven purchased.  Yet, with that big of a number, nothing really stood out that much.  Avengers the Initiative (a perennial pick here at the Ettatorial) wasn’t it’s usual self, Trinity seemed to take a step back in regards to it’s story-telling clarity, Justice League of America tried, but came up short, and even the Astonishing X-Men: Ghost Boxes seemed a bit on the off side due to the inflated price and it’s apparent shortness  (though Adi Granov’s artwork is just gorgeous and came close overcoming those shortcomings).  So what’s that leave us for a pick?

My pick this week is Amazing Spider-Man #575.  Two weeks in a row for the title getting the nod, so why is that?  The issue marks Joe Kelly’s first issue as part of the writing team (not counting his contribution to Spider-Man Extra from August), and teamed with Chris Bachalo, his artistic partner from Steampunk, the duo does a fantastic job in telling a good Spider-Man tale.  Kelly’s handling of Spider-Man’s wit and sense of humor, especially in the opening, lead me to believe that the writer is perfect for handling the character.  It brings me to mind of the older “classic” Spidey, and that’s a good thing.  This, mixed with his ability to make C-grade villain Hammerhead seem viable and threatening instead of a bad mobster cliche bodes well for the other less memorable of Spidey’s rogues gallery in the future.  Bachalo’s art is another plus for the title.  While I originally had my doubts about how his art style would work on the wall-crawler, consider me won over now.  The art just seems to click, and while a bit more of a “cool” style on the character than I usually like, it just works here.  All and all, I get an almost 1980’s vibe to the book, and seeing as that is how I most fondly remember the book, I’m satisfied. Here’s hoping the conclusion to the story next week is as good, and that Mr. Kelly can keep up the level of quality while working with the “Spidey Brain Trust”.

So there you have it folks, your pick for the week.  I’ll see you back here next week, same time, same channel.
