The Ettatorial for the Week of 12-16-09

A huge week of releases this week, with most companies trying to get product out before the holiday and end of the year. I ended up with a whopping 10 books, and would have had 11 had the Next Issue Project #2/ Silver Streak Comics #24 not have sold out. Surprisingly after getting through them all, what I thought might get pick of the week didn’t, and one book really came through. What was it, you ask? Well, read on.
Your pick for this week is Thunderbolts #139. Writer Jeff Parker might not be familiar to a large amount of you, but I have to say he’s one of Marvel’s best kept secrets, and one of it’s best writers. He has quietly written some of their best stuff in recent years, from his run on the Marvel Adventures Avengers title (the Modoc and Ego issues alone are gold) to his Agents of Atlas series, the man can really write, and not just in one way, as his output crosses genres and age groups. All that is to say, his taking over Thunderbolts is a stroke of genius, and hopefully will elevate his profile. This issue also has Parker’s Agents of Atlas, and that will also hopefully elevate them, as their series is criminally under-read, and looks like is going on hiatus. This issue has the ‘Bolts being sent after the Agents at Norman Osborn’s order, and once the Agents are in the picture, the book really shines. From great one-liners about Namora, to seeing Ant-Man deal with danger, to “Give me a Red”, Parker has this issue doing it all right. Great action, intrigue, and just the right amount humor, this is just comics done right.
Well, there you have it folks, your pick for the week. I’ll see you back here next week, same time, same channel.
