The Ettatorial for the Week of 12-28-07

The last Ettatorial for the year, and of course it’s the biggest week of releases I’ve had to purchase in over 6 months. The sheer amount of new releases this week that I bought was huge, easily giving me a large number of books vying for book of the week. The sad part is just how disappointing some of them were (a disproportionate number of them being DC releases-just an observation) and how the same books were the ones still rising to the top. Some, like Batman, were about the final straw in my even buying them again (seriously, how can Batman+Grant Morrison continually keep equaling crap with the occasionally good story thrown in to keep my buying?) and some, like Amazing Spider-Man making wonder why Marvel made the decision to do what it did (but at least I want to keep buying to see where it all heads). Instead, we’re left with my picks for this week. The first is Avengers: The Initiative #8, with an issue that shows just how perfect a Marvel book can be. Excellent writing from Slott and Gage, showcasing the vast scope of Marvel’s shared universe. New characters winding their way into the cast (the new Ant-Man fresh from his canceled series) and a personal favorite becoming a staff member with hilarious effect (the Taskmaster), all blending together into one perfect comic. I look forward to this series every issue, and after every one, look forward even more. The second pick this week is Captain America #33. The book continues along its fascinating path without it’s title character, and yet, it just keeps getting better. Brubaker and Epting continue to show just how perfect their run on the book is, and closer to cementing them in my opinion as the creative team to beat on Captain America. Everything moves forward in the issue, and makes the upcoming “new Cap” storyline eagerly anticipated. So there you go, the last Ettatorial for the year, and your last picks of 2007.
