The Ettatorial for the Week of 2-06-08

A change of pace this week, as this week’s meager releases did nothing to deserve book of the week status. Only 3 books, with none of them rising to the top. Instead, I’m going to the tried and true trade paperback/graphic novel suggestions instead. The two picks for this week are both great picks, one of them being one of the best things I’ve read in the last 10 years out of the comics medium.

The first is The Escapists. When I mentioned one of these books being one of the best things I’ve read in 10 years, this one is it. With a story by Brian K. Vaughan, this is one the beautifully told tale. Part meta tale, part love letter to the medium, and part entertaining story with a relationship to the Pulitzer Prize winning “Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay”, The Escapists has it all for everyone. This is the book you can give to a new comics fan, a veteran reader, and even to those that don’t read comics, and everyone of them would enjoy it. The story revolves around a son realizing his father’s love of comics and one character in particular, and how taking charge of that long lost character changes both his, and his friends lives. Touching, humorous, and definitely entertaining, the story is nothing but a high note for the comics medium.

The other pick this week is Dynamo 5. One of the newer titles on the stands, I took the chance after reading the glowing reviews of it and finding out the trade paperback collecting the first 7 issues was only $10! For a book that individually is priced at $3.50 an issue, the deal was obvious. And after reading it, the deal was even better. Featuring a story by under-appreciated writer Jay Faeber and art by newcomer Mamud A. Asrar, the high concept alone is genius. Imagine how the illegitimate sons and daughters of a superhero might be, and what happens when they all learn the truth about their lives and team up to fight crime. Easily one of the break-out superhero books of the last few years, and this trade collects 7 issues for just $10.

So there you go, your picks for this week. Be back next week, where hopefully I will have some comic picks for you, otherwise it’s back to the trades.
