The Ettatorial for the Week of 2-27-08
By Etta | March 1, 2008
A terrific week of releases this week, full of diversity and somehow, both my picks for the week are Ed Brubaker titles. Brubaker has his hands full, doing 4 titles a month, and somehow the quality on them remains higher than people with half that amount of regular titles (cough*Jeph Loeb* cough). The man is a revelation for Marvel’s staff, writing books in multiple genres and doing them all service.
The first pick this week is Criminal (volume 2) #1. This is quite possibly my favorite book being released currently. The writing, art, and even back matter of the book (now even more to enjoy with the new volume) are just perfect. This first issue is a stand-alone tale, easy for new readers to get into, or if you’re a regular reader like myself, full of little easter eggs to showcase it in the world Brubaker and Phillips have created. If you love noir, you have an obligation to try this title out.
The second pick this week is, as I mentioned, is another Brubaker book. So which is it? Daredevil was released this week, as was Captain America (what, no Uncanny X-men to have all his titles released in one week?). Well, Captain America gets the nod from me. The title never seems to disappoint, continuing on with a world without Steve Rogers as Captain America and just what all that entails. With a rich supporting cast, the book keeps the quality from slipping, instead becoming even more engrossing. With the Winter Soldier/Bucky now in the role of Cap, we’re being treated to learning the Red Skull’s plan for bringing down America. Full of action, intrique, and rich characterization, this book is a can’t miss.
Well, there you have it, my picks for the week. We’ll see you back here next week, same bat time, same bat channel.
