The Ettatorial for the Week of 2-4-09

A very good week of releases this week, highlighted by my two choices above.  It’s nice to see a good quality week again, especially when the two books that are selected are newcomers to the publishing plans of either of the big two.  Hopefully both titles can continue their level of quality and their respective publishers can see new books can succeed in this tough financial climate.

First up is #6.  Easily the best book the DC is currently publishing, this title is always full of surprises.  With a group of characters as diverse as the Six, there’s no telling where this title will go.  Simone always manages to shock the reader with just how dark things can be for the cast, and this issue is no exception.  With the team on the outs with just about every villain in the DCU, one could think that no other threat could rear it’s head, and in typical Simone style, you’d be wrong.  Every member has their moment here, including newcomer Jeanette, whose origin is explained within.  All that and Junior’s dark punishment continues to be one of the most disturbing things in comic books today.  is the title DC needs to put some marketing behind, as it deserves the push to show off just how good it is.  This issue is just one example of that level of quality.

The second pick this week is #1.  Spinning out of Secret Invasion, this new title chronicles Nick Fury and his team of operatives.  As I stated previously in the a week’s Ettatorial, Jonathan Hickman’s debut for Marvel is something special.  While Brian Bendis is listed as a co-plotter here, it’s Hickman’s style that shines through in multiple elements of the book, including the design work in the backmatter.  Along with art by Stefano Caselli (recently of Avengers The Initiative fame), the book both reads and looks great.  Nick Fury has needed his own book for quite a while, and finally is given his due here.  Adding to the intrigue is his new group, whose exploits at the beginning of Secret Invasion were one of the better tie-ins.  The group’s parentage of existing Marvel characters gives some potential for interesting stories, as does the shocking reveal at the end of the issue.  While some are decrying the reveal as horrible, and others as a stroke of genius, I’m reserving judgement until I see the fruits of labor it pulls off.  All and all, manages to be a great first issue, and hopefully can continue it’s greatness in issue two.

There you go folks, your picks for this week.  We’ll see you back here next week, same time, same channel.
