The Ettatorial for the Week of 3-18-09
A small but worthwhile week of releases, as half of my purchases made the grade for picks of the week. Two out of four isn’t bad, especially when the others weren’t bad, just not as good as my picks. On with the show.
First up this week is Amazing Spider-Man Extra #3. A quick side note, this issue is best read after Amazing Spider-Man #588 (also out this week and quite excellent) due to one of the stories within. The sole reason this issue got the nod is one of the stories in this issue is one of the best Norman/Harry Osborn stories I’ve read. While the other two stories included are good, the Joe Kelly penned “Nice Things” is beautifully written and deserving of your attention. Focusing on Harry Osborn’s childhood growing up with Norman, this heartfelt tale feels like it could happen to anyone, and how this one moment would shape a person’s life just feels right. Considering Norman Osborn’s importance to the current state of Marvel’s publishing plans and stories, this might just be the single best insight to his character you’ll see. Highly recommended.
The second pick this is Dark Avengers #3. It must be a theme this week, because this issue has Norman Osborn being the highlight of the issue, and has one of the most interesting conversations on insanity I’ve ever read. A large portion of the issue is a conversation between the Sentry and Norman Osborn regarding just why the Sentry is part of Osborn’s new Avengers group and the motivations behind it. Osborn’s speech steals the show here, and might just be one of the best things Bendis has written in his prolific career (at least on the Marvel side of his work). Besides the conversation, the Dark Avengers (I still have issues with the title, but that’s neither here nor there) battle with Morgan Le Fey continues and Doom’s involvement again comes to the forefront. All and all, the issue is solid, and Osborn and the Sentry make it worth the purchase.
There you have it folks, your picks for the week. We’ll see you back here next week, same time, same channel.
