The Ettatorial for the Week of 3-19-08
By Etta | March 22, 2008
A big week of releases this week, made bigger for yours truly because of books that sold out last week. And while I actually would have pick one as book of the week, I won’t because here at the Ettatorial, I keep with my rule of picking from the current week’s releases. Instead, I’ve got two books for you this week.
The first is Captain America #36. The second act of Brubaker’s “Death of Captain America” arc comes to it’s penultimate chapter, and it’s a biggie. We’re treated to the new Cap’s first trial by combat (and see just how handy the new add-ons to his kit can be) against Sin, Crossbones, and the Serpent Squad, and after that get to see how Bucky’s voice to the public fares versus his mentor’s. The true beauty of the issue is the cliff-hangar at the end of the issue, which I won’t spoil. Needless to say, the next issue should be a dozy, not that this title would give anything else.
The other pick this week is Checkmate #24. I recently was saddened to learn that writer and driving force, Greg Rucka, would be leaving the book after #25. After this issue, I’m even more sad. Checkmate is good almost always. It’s even better when it’s able to showcase the fact that it’s involved with the rest of the DC universe, and that’s what it does this issue, as we see most of the Justice League, Justice Society, and assorted other metas involved with one of Checkmate’s operations. And for a cliff-hangar, we’re treated to a tease of finally seeing the Rooks revealed to go along with just what the book’s story-arc has been going for 24 issues. I know I’ll be happy when issue 25 is released, but after reading it, sad to know that the Checkmate I know and love is going away, and that I’ll be leaving the book along with Rucka.
So there you have it folk, your picks for the week. Enjoy reading, and I’ll see you back here next week.

Really? An “Avengers” related-book is recommended in the Ettatorial?!? No way! I can’t believe it. I didn’t see that one coming at all. Next you’re gonna tell me that New Avengers and Mighty Avengers are recommended, too.

To be fair, while Cap is “Avengers” related, I’d consider it a “Marvel Universe” title at the moment, seeing as Brubaker has managed to make the book almost self-contained and crossover free during his(genius)run. And considering the rest of the week’s releases included Countdown, a surprisingly weak Ex Machina (theres a first time for everything), and some other books that were just so-so, Captain America was bound to get the nod for book of the week. But for you, I’ll try to get more Avengers books on here
