The Ettatorial for the Week of 3-31-10

A small week of releases this week, a total of just three purchases made.  And while my selection for pick of the week isn’t earth shattering, it does fit with this holiday weekend.  What is it, and what’s with the lame holiday reference?  Read on.

My pick this week is #627.  While I’ve sang this title’s praises more than a few times, this issue hit me in just the right way to merit it’s selection this week.  This issue is pure comics comfort food, and for this holiday weekend, with most people sitting around with family and probably eating the same menu they’ve known every year since they were young, I found it fitting for a comic to have the same effect.   The writer behind this particular issue is Roger Stern, best known as one of the best writers on characters ranging from Superman to the Avengers (My all-time favorite Avengers story and actual first introduction to the team was “Under Siege”)  to yes, even Spider-Man.  His work on the character is considered classic, with both “Nothing Can Stop the Juggernaut” and the “Kid Who Collects Spider-Man” both being seminal tales of the Wall-Crawler.  He returns here for a sort-of sequel (though more in tone than in continuity) with “Something Can Stop the Juggernaut”.  His artistic collaborator is Lee Weeks, an artist I find criminally under-rated, and a perfect fit to the writer when they’ve worked together in the past.  Nothing earth-shattering or genre-changing happens here, unless you consider just good-’ol-fashioned comics being made.  Classic take on a classic character, with a seasoned and well-regarded writer collaborating with a skilled artist who is known for good story-telling abilities, telling a story that brings back fond memories of both the character and more innocent times when you first read it when you were young-That’s what you’re getting when you check this out.  This is exactly how I like my Spider-Man, and this title has hit another home run with this recent issue.

There you go folks, your pick for the week.  I’ll see you back here next week, same time, same channel.
