The Ettatorial for the Week of 4-02-08
By Etta | April 5, 2008
A nice week of releases this week, from the first big “event” book of the summer from the big two, to some nice indie releases including the first issue of Anna Mercury. For such a diverse week, two books stood out, and became my picks for this week.
The first pick for this week is Casanova #13. While I’ve been singing this book’s praises since the first issue, it’s just now being noticed by a wider audience as writer Matt Fraction has become a writer on the rise at Marvel. While his work there has been very good, it’s Casanova where he really shines. Being a creator-owned book, this is where anything and everything can happen, as it always does. Fraction’s second arc on the book has been creative, managing to tell the story sans the title character, and still somehow be about him. This issue actually sees Cass, though in flashbacks, helping to bring his moments with the supporting/main cast to light. Full of interesting character bits, snappy and creative dialog, and plenty of action, Casanova is always worth a look. And as a reminder, the book is only $1.99, so no excuses about not being able to afford it-add Casanova to your list and you’ll not be dissappointed.
The second pick this week is Secret Invasion #1. Yes, it’s an event book. Yes, loyal Ettatorial readers, it does involve the Avengers (though, in my defense, it’s a Marvel Universe story, it involves all the characters) so we’ll get that out of the way as well. Now that we have that out in the open, let’s explain how good the issue really is. After a long build-up, the Skrull invasion of Earth is finally here. Bendis has crafted a story long in the making (since Avengers Dis-Assembled), and the pay-off starts here. With a new look at Skrulls, showcasing new incites to their culture including religion, the book breathes new life into the concept of the shape-shifting race. And with all that, we’re treated to some mystery of just who is a Skrull (4 being revealed in the issue, with two of them being a surprise to me personally) and the bigger mystery of who is a Skrull being given after certain events herein. With better writing for an “event” book than usual (Bendis steps it up after House of M’s so-so showing) and great art by Lenil Yu (helped in part by tighter inks by Mark Morales), the book is a blockbuster with substance for the summer.
So there you have it, loyal readers. Your picks for this week, both selected with care just for you. We’ll see you back here next week for more.
