The Ettatorial for the Week of 4-15-09
A nice week of releases, though short one due to the sell-out of Godland at my local store. With that in mind, here are your picks of the week.
The first pick for this week is Incognito #3. Basically at it’s halfway point, this series is still defying expectations of just what it is. The blend of pulp elements, noir style, and superheroics are proving to be a winning combination. With art that both invokes both pulp and modern day style, the book is clicking on all cylinders. This issue brings into focus more of the world that Zack Overkill inhabits, with some glimpses at other heroes and villains that populate this interesting world. I can’t really say much about the story with fear of spoiling it, just that as usual, there’s always a twist. Highly recommended for everyone.
Amazing Spider-Man #591 is the second pick for this week. While the first part of this two-parter was decent, it lacked that certain spark to bring it up to the level of a book of the week. This part however does possess that certain something, and the book shines because of it. While the the media picked up on the revelation at the end of the book (a concept that should prove to have some story potential for not just this title, but quite a few of Marvel’s books’) I don’t want to give it away to those that don’t want to ruin the surprise- spoilers- J.J. Jameson is now the Mayor of New York City. While this neat little twist was fun, it’s the interplay between the Fantastic Four and Spider-Man and the goings-on with Spider-Man’s supporting cast that really make this issue work. Dan Slott proves he just “gets” the Marvel characters, and can write them all to be in character while all the while coming up with new angles and directions to write them in. A new classic in regards to Spider-Man and the Fantastic Four, this just proves that the title is fully back to the glory a flagship title should have.
There you have it folks, your picks for the week. We’ll see you back here next week, same time, same channel.
