A very nice week of releases this week, with your pick being what I will consider a surprise choice. And if you add in Free Comic Book Day’s releases (what, you didn’t go out to your local comic book retailer and take advantage of this terrific annual tradition?), this was quite a week.
Your pick this week is Resurrection: Insurgent Edition tradepaperback. Most of you probably haven’t heard of this title (though it’s positive word of mouth mixed with it’s Free Comic Book day #0 means you should have) and that’s a shame. This trade paperback got the nod for pick of the week for quite a few reasons, the first of which is the spectacular deal this trade represents. The issues included within are #s 1-6, plus the first annual. That’s 7 issues, each originally priced at $3.50 an issue. That’s 184 pages in one package. And while most trades this size would be priced at $20 or more, this one is $6.00. That is easily the best deal of the week, and quite possibly the year. And when the great price gets you to check it out, you’ll find the quality within is more than equal to the price you paid. Marc Guggenheim’s high concept for this series is based on is just what happens the day after all those alien invasions take place, ala Independence Day etc. Part Walking Dead, part sci-fi channel, this concept seems like a no-brainer, but I can’t remember anyone trying to make it work. While the artwork by newcomers David Dumeer and Douglas Dabbs is a bit on the rougher side, you can see some some greater work as the series progresses, with the artists obviously learning as they go. I encourage everyone to check this out, with all the rising cover prices these days, nobody has any excuses to check it out due to price. Cudos to Oni to releasing this in this way, as I was introduced to a series that I might not have checked out, and now would say I consider myself a fan.
There you have it folks, your pick for this week. I’ll see you back here next week, same time, same channel.
