The Ettatorial for the Week of 5-14-08
By Etta | May 17, 2008
A small week of releases for me this week, made smaller by the sell-out of Amazing Spider-Man at my store. Surprisingly though, even with the smaller amount of books picked up this week, two still rose to the top as picks for the week.
The first pick for the week is Casanova #14. Matt Fraction’s excellent series draws to the conclusion of it’s second arc, and it’s a spectacular display of comics done right. With a finale that serves both as a story ending, and a critique/meta discussion of the book from it’s author, the book is simply genius. While those of you who haven’t tried out the title will definitely be confused going in, those that have been keeping up will find the final twists something that nobody saw coming-and I mean no one, as the twist employed isn’t simply something nobody has done, it’s something that a person would think would never work. I recently read a well written piece on why Casanova is so important to the medium of comics here, and encourage those who are interested to check it out, as I could never do such a well done insightful article.
The second pick for this week is Thunderbolts #120. While just about everyone of the new Thunderbolts group have been given voice in Ellis and Deodato’s new T-Bolts run, Norman (Green Goblin) Osborn hasn’t really had his moment to truly shine. This issue fixes that, as Norman’s insane dialogue at the beginning of the issue is reason enough to buy this issue. Giving Osborn the ramblings of a mad man is one thing, but Ellis manages to almost make him sympathetic and humorous at the same time. Besides that gem of moments, the rest of the issue sees the rest of the T-Bolts taking on not one, but two problems from within, with Venom and the Swordsman both showcasing their inner madness. And to pull it all together is the group of captured unregistered superhumans causing the powderkeg that is the team to become even more explosive. With only one more issue to go, I’m going to miss this creative team’s take on the group of villains compromising the Thunderbolts team.
So there you have it, your picks for this week. We’ll see you back here next week, same time, same channel.
