The Ettatorial for the Week of 5-29-08
Well, as I promised last week, this week’s selection is not your normal pick(s) of the week. No, as you’re reading this, I’m lugging furniture and boxes around my wife and my new house, while you’re sitting comfortably in a chair-you know, it would have been nice if you at least offered to help us move people, after all the joy I give you every week. As a matter of fact, I don’t even have internet capability for another 4 days after this is initially posted. Oh well, it’s alright, I guess I’ll survive (as long as I don’t get a hernia from lifting the tv around). So this week’s pick is going to instead be a trade paperback/graphic novel selection instead. It’s a shame too, as this week’s new comics were looking awfully good on paper (issues including the first Final Crisis, an All-Star Superman, the Giant-Size Astonishing X-Men special, well, you get the idea)-a good week, but no recommendations from me other than go check out what came out this week. So, without further ado, here is something special for you instead.
popgun Volume 1 is a behemoth from Image Comics. Clocking in at a whopping 447 pages, it’s the first in a line of anthology volumes coming from Image this year. With a multitude of different creators involved, some known and some unknowns, everyone can find something to love within it’s pages. I recently found myself in an anthology mood, and this bar none is probably the best one I’ve had the pleasure of checking out, beating out even reigning champ Flight as best of the best. Stories within it’s pages range across every genre, as the theme of popgun is a “graphic mixtape” to the medium of comics, with everyone involved creating stories or “tracks” if you will, filling in their work as part of their love to the artform instead of songs. And when I mean any genre, I mean it, as it’s got detectives and mystery, superheroes, love stories, comedy, cute animals, artsy bits, historical fiction, rock and roll, bizarre bits, and so much more. Like I said, there’s something in here for everyone. And with such a vast array of creators involved (with even more on the way for volumes 2 and 3), I was introduced to some new names to be on the look out for. I can’t really get into all of what the contents included, as I said the book is too massive for a description of every story, but there were highlights I really enjoyed throughout.
So there you have it folks, a really great recommendation for your reading pleasure this week. I’ll see you back here next week as we return to our regular schedule of reviews (barring the cable company actually getting my internet service in on schedule).
