The Ettatorial for the Week of 6-04-08
By Etta | June 7, 2008
A small week of releases this week, making for only one recommended pick for you. After last week’s huge releases, that makes sense (at least for my wallet). And speaking of last week, there were a ton of great stuff that I wasn’t able to recommend as I was moving and the Ettatorial was pre-written. Without going into a long bit of reviews for the books, I do have to say Final Crisis seemed of to a promising start, and All Star Superman was it’s usual brilliant self. But anyways, back to our regular show, and this week’s pick.
Criminal #3 is this week’s pick. As so many issues of the series in the past, this character piece shines. The last of 3 1970’s stand alone stories (though all of them have ties to one another), the issue focuses on a femme fatale seen in the previous two issues. Brubaker’s script here really gets the feelings of self loathing and addiction across, breathing true life into his character. As with all crime-noir, it’s not truly about crime (that’s just a background benefit), it’s about characters and their motivations, flaws, dreams, and a reflection of life around us. Criminal does this in spades, and should always be given a look when it’s released. And lest I make you think it’s just Brubaker’s excellent scripts giving the book it’s shine, Sean Phillips artwork is phenomenal. Phillips makes everything in the Criminal world totally believable, getting a realistic shine on the book that few artists could manage. His layouts and sense of art direction for the series showcase his director’s eye, and that’s something to be appreciated in a book like this.
So there you have it folks, your pick of the week. We’ll see you back here next week, same time, same channel.
