The Ettatorial for the Week of 6-30-10
A small week of releases this week, just three in all, and while all three were adequate, none really stood out as a pick. So, considering that, and the fact I have a stack of tpbs/graphic novels I’ve been trying to tackle, I’m going with a recommendation on one of those instead.
Your pick this week is The Invincible Iron Man Omnibus. Collecting the most recent run of Invincible Iron Man by Matt Fraction and Salvador Larroca, this massive volume contains issues one thru nineteen. The series won a 2009 Eisner for best new series, and after reading this, one can see that it is well deserved. Fraction makes a case here for being my favorite Iron Man writer ever, as his portrayal of Tony Stark truly comes alive. His grasp of Stark’s inner struggles and prideful attitude makes a definitive statement on the character. Larroca’s art, while heavily photo referenced, keeps the book looking good and consistent from start to finish, showcasing the artist’s strength of being one of the few artists currently working who understands a deadline. This volume contains 19 issues of the series, and as such has the opening storyline dealing with Stark’s newest villain Ezekiel Stane and continues with a much longer story involving Norman Osborn’s “Dark Reign”. Both stories are terrific, with my appreciation for the longer Dark Reign flavored “World’s Most Wanted” having the slight edge due to the planning involved in the plotting and storytelling. “World’s Most Wanted” also has some nice nods to past Iron Man continuity without bogging new readers down, as readers get to see just about every important past Iron Man armor in action again. Readers both new and familiar with the character will love this massive volume, and I endorse it to any of those that are just familiar with the Iron Man movies looking for a perfect introduction the the comic continuity while keeping some of the flavor that the movies popularized.
Well, there you have it folks, your pick for the week. I’ll see you back here next week, same time, same channel.
