The Ettatorial for the Week of 7-02-08

A small week of releases for me this week, making up for last week’s monstrous amount of books.  So, out of four books that I purchased, you get one pick of the week.  Quick and simple this week folks, they can’t all be long and rambling.

The pick this week is Astonishing X-Men #25.   The first from the creative team taking over for Whedon and Cassaday, the new team consisting of Warren Ellis and Simone Bianchi takes the book in a new direction.  Perfect for new readers, or those wanting to hop on an “X” book without really having to worry about past continuity or issues associated with the X-Men.  While I’m a huge Ellis fan, it’s Bianchi’s art here that really raises the quality of the book.  His art, heavy with European influence and details, is simply gorgeous to look at.  I’m reminded by Juan Gimenez of Metabaron’s fame, with a dash of J.H. Williams III’s layout and art direction.  And when that’s the case, any artist that gifted is bound to get a person’s attention on his artwork.  Ellis gives him plenty to work with here as well, with a tale giving the team a new locale, new “costumes”, and some fun new tech to work with.  All and all, a good fun book, and hopefully the start of an interesting arc from a creative team that has a large hill to climb against the shadow of the former creators-one I think they’re capable of achieving.

There you are folks, your pick for the week.  See you back here next week, same time, same channel.
