The Ettatorial for the Week of 7-10-08

A tiny week of releases this week, made more tiny by the sell-out of Powers at my local shop. So, this week gives you just one pick of the week, with Trinity just barely missing being picked as a second choice.

This week’s pick is Secret Invasion #4. Yes, it’s an event book, and yes, it’s kind of an obvious choice for reading, but the series has been good, and thus on a small week like this one for yours truly, it makes my pick of the week. As a side note, not only does it get my pick for book of the week, but I really love that cover by Gabriele Dell’Otto-how cool is that? Bendis gives what’s basically the comic book equivalent of a epic tracking shot with a monologue overlay for half the issue, dealing with the main invasion force over New York fighting with Nick Fury and his forces. While I normally would be suspicious of an attempt like that, it actually works here, with Yu’s artwork bringing it all together nicely. The rest of the issue gives a nice bit to the other players involved, and sets up some interesting opportunities for the rest of the mini-series event.

As a side note, I have to mention that Marvel is seeming to pull off their massive summer event with Secret Invasion. DC on the other hand is on dubious ground with Final Crisis, with the series itself being good, but almost totally missing the mark so far on any sort of continuity or tie-ins to the series.  Final Crisis Requiem (released this week) was horrible, a total disappointment of an issue, by a creative team I expect better of, with a character that deserved much better. I’d hate to say that Final Crisis is a failure at this point (it is only 2 issues in), but unless DC can get their act together, they’re really going to lose momentum and sales to the Secret Invasion juggernaut.

So there you have it folks, your pick for the week. We’ll see you back here next week, same time, same channel.
