The Ettatorial for the Week of 7-22-09

amazing+spider-man#600

A small, but decidedly great week of releases this week.  Only three books on the purchases stack, all of them worthy of attention.  But one really deserves the attention more so than the others, so read on.

The pick of the week for this week is #600.  Clocking in at a whopping 104 pages, no ads, with all original material (no reprints of past work like other anniversary issues) with a cover price of just $4.99, this issue is easily one of the best values in recent memory.  The main story in this issue is the size of multiple issues of other books,  all of it done by Dan Slott and John Romita Jr.  Other stories within are by a diverse group of creators, including the legendary Stan Lee.  And after all those, there’s also a great bit of one-pagers done by a variety of A-list talent of  “Spider-Man Covers You’ll Never See!” that are hilarious.  This is a prime example of a “classic” Spider-Man tale, one that everyone can enjoy.  It truly has everything, ranging from Peter’s personal life and it’s problems, to Aunt May’s upcoming nuptials in this very issue, to multiple hero team-ups (the Daredevil opening is just hilarious and perfectly written) to the return of a classic foe that hasn’t been seen in quite a while.  Good solid comics all the way around, #600 is the best deal on the stands this week, not to mention a perfect example of Spider-Man done right.

There you have it folks, your pick for the week.  I’ll see you back here next week, same time, same channel.
