The Ettatorial for the Week of 7-23-08
A large week of releases this week made for some interesting reads and a couple good picks. While perrenial pick Avengers the Initiative fell short, and New Avengers did as well, Brave and the Bold came really close to earning the nod, as did Godland #24 (only missing the mark because it was released last week). Instead, we’re treated to the two picks that did make the cut.
The first pick this week is Liberty Comics #1. An issue that serves as a fundraiser to the CBLDF (that’s Comic Book Legal Defense Fund for those uninformed to the terrific charity), it’s a series of short stories and pin-ups all for the purpose of raising money to fight for 1st Amendment rights. Underneath your choice of covers (Either the one I choose above, a Mike Mignola Hellboy, or a J. Scott Campbell Danger Girl) lies a wealth of material. Chock full of talent ranging from Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson’s Boys story, to Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips Criminal piece, to cute bits from Sergio Aragones and Mark Evanier, to pieces from Mark Millar, Darwyn Cooke, Art Adams and more, this is just what comics are all about. All of the talent involved here are first rate, and all of which donated their time and work for free for the book, in the service of raising money for a charity that’s very important. Every single person should be seeking out this book to buy, not just for the awesomeness contained within, but for reason it is published in the first place-freedom of speech and the 1st Amendment.
The second pick this week is Daredevil #109. Coming from the pen of this year’s Eisner Award Winning Best Writer (won just last night) Ed Brubaker with the special addition of co-writer Greg Rucka and penciller Micheal Lark, the issue makes me fondly remember the creative team’s Gotham Central days. Full of great character bits for each of those involved (especially new personal fav Dakota North), this is exactly what I want in a DD comic. I love the attention to Murdock’s law practice, and while DD in action is always appreciated, if you did a book with just Murdock, Foggy, and Dakota North without any of the costumed action, I think I’d still enjoy it this much if this creative team were involved. Don’t think though that there’s no action involved here though, as DD is given ample time for fisticuffs and violence, it’s just not front and center.
Well, that’s it for this week folks, we’ll see you back here next week, same time, same channel.
