The Ettatorial for the Week of 7-29-09

A rather large week of releases this week, with quite a few books vying for book of the week status. After some deep debate, two books stepped up above and beyond.
First off for the week is Detective Comics #855. The second issue of the Rucka and Williams III run, this issue is just beautiful. Now, I will put that into context here though, as while I loved this issue, it’s not as perfect as the first . The issue is masterfully told, with events flowing into one another, with the action leading to enlightening character bits told through hallucinogenic haze of Batwoman. Williams’ art here is just gorgeous to behold, with creative and artistic layouts (his strength in my opinion) gracing just about every page. My only complaint is the color palette on this issue seems a bit on the darker side compared to the last issue, but it’s a minor quibble when taking into account the lush imagery within. The Question second feature is a treat as well, with Rucka showing off just how tough Montoya’s Question can be. It’s nice, even though it’s basically a long fight scene, and I have to say DC did a great job pairing up these two characters in a second feature title. All and all, a great book.
The second pick this week is Ignition City #4. I’ve been a huge advocate of this mini-series since it launched, and this issue is no exception. I love the Deadwood/Buck Rogers flavor contained within it’s pages, and feel the need to keep recommending it every chance I get. The series is close to over, but I hope that like Ellis’ other Avatar series, we’ll see this one return for more. The world that’s been created for the series seems ripe for so many stories, and it would be a shame not to see more of this imaginative world. Those that like their science fiction with a heaping of a classic western, fans of Deadwood and Serenity, and those looking for something besides the capes and tights routine are highly recommended to seek this series out.
So there you go folks, your picks for the week. I’ll see you back here next week, same time, same channel.
