The Ettatorial for the Week of 8-13-08

I’m baaaaack.  As most readers of the Ettatorial noticed, there was wasn’t one last week.  The reason being, my wife and welcomed our first child (a daughter) into the world on August 6.  A most amazing day, and comics were far from a priority.  So while I did actually manage to get comics thanks to the efforts of Jay and Jason of podcast fame, there just wasn’t time to get a review written.  So I’m back this week, and ready to go again.

This week’s pick is #11.    Long time readers of the Ettatorial will remember that ’s first weekly series “52” was a hit here at Project Silence, garnering quite a few picks of the week.  “Countdown” on the other hand, was a stinker, a train wreck, one which made me question if “52” was lightening in a bottle, or if maybe “Countdown” was the mistake.  Well, is ‘s third weekly, and eleven issues in seems to be leaning more toward a hit than a flop.

While most the issues thus far have been solid and entertaining, none have stepped up above that for a pick.  This issue changes that, as Busiek’s plot seems to have reached fruition, and that was all I needed to give the nod to the book.  It’s nice to see Busiek given a large stage to tell his story, unencumbered by tie-ins or crossovers.  That may be why it’s taken a bit for the series to really pop, but I think it finally has.

Adding to the goodness is ’s consistently great art.  While I was initially skeptical of seeing his work on a book after his 18+ years at , I should have known better.  As usual, he puts forth a thoroughly professional job, especially considering the iconic and diverse cast.  His new character designs are great, and while almost more “-like” than “-esque”, they’re fitting and worth remembering.  I think that he’s found his grove for the company’s characters, and considering that it’s only 11 issues in 3 months time, that’s pretty impressive.

Well, that’s another week’s picks down.  We’ll see you back here next week, same time, same channel for another Ettatorial.
