The Ettatorial for the Week of 8-20-08
A very nice week of releases this week, highlighted by my pick of the week. While there were quite a few books purchased, only one really rose to the top. A few came real close, Brave and the Bold and Captain America being two, but I decided to just go with one book this week.
The pick for this week is Amazing Spider-Man #568. Part one of New Ways to Die, this is what can best be described as the summer event for Spider-Man. Featuring the glorious return of John Romita Jr. to pencilling, and master scribe Dan Slott on writing chores, the book just shines.
And if the creative team isn’t enough (how could it not be though, as Romita Jr.’s return to Spider-Man is reason enough to celebrate), there’s the return of Norman Osborn and Eddie Brock (a character I really disliked, until now thanks to this very issue).
And the cherry on top is the back up tale by Mark Waid and Adi Granov. The book has so much awesome talent involved it’s almost impossible for it to fail. And it sure doesn’t fail, as Amazing Spider-Man is back to being one of Marvel’s flagship books, full of everything that initially made it into a success in the first place. Fun, check. Great writing, check. Fantastic artwork, check. Action and adventure, check. Soap opera elements with the supporting cast, check.
I could go on, but instead, why don’t you just go out and buy the book already? This is exactly the Spider-Man everyone loves and remembers, and while there will still be those that refuse to accept that due to the way this status quo was reached, they’re the ones missing out.

So there you go, another pick of the week for you. I’ll see you back here next week, same time, same channel.
