The Ettatorial for the Week of 8-27-08
A huge week of releases this week, with enough quality to make my selection process a bit on the difficult side. With books ranging from the craziness/high-concept of Morrison’s 3-D Final Crisis: Superman Beyond to the release (again) of all three Avengers books in one week, to very good issues of Daredevil, Thunderbolts and DC Universe Last Will and Testament, there was a just a glut of (good) books. But as you know, only a few can get the nod for my picks of the week. So without further ado, here we go.
My first pick this week is Doktor Sleepless #8. This issue is the concluding chapter of book one, and really gets the series heading in a very interesting direction. While Doktor Sleepless has been shown in a semi-villain like light, up to this point it’s all been sympathetic. That changes here, as the series protagonist is also shown to be the bad guy of the story. A very interesting way to lead the story forward, and one that should prove to lead the story into a new direction. While there isn’t much “action” in the issue per say, all the conversation and monologues are more than enough to keep a reader on the edge of their seat. The book is definentely not for younger readers, as the topics and language are adult. As long as you’re not too young, and don’t mind not having a guy in a cape or tights in a book, this is a great book to get in on.
The other pick of the week is Avengers: The Initiative #16. After a slight misstep in the last issue, the book is back on it’s usual pace of awesomeness. Tying into Marvel’s Secret Invasion, the book still manages to keep multiple character arcs and plot lines going while still being a big part of the cross-over. This issue marks the return of the Skrull Kill Krew, and I have to say, I think I enjoy them more here than in their ill-fated mini from years back. Maybe it’s Slott’s and Gage’s scripting, or Caselli’s artwork, but the concept just really works here. Besides all that, we’re also treated to Ant-Man’s ongoing (hilarious) cowardice, a glimpse at a couple of the other 50 state teams, and the same attention to detail and continuity that makes the book so fun.
There you have it, my picks for this week. We’ll see you back here next week, same time, same channel.
