The Ettatorial for the Week of 9-16-09

A large and diverse group of new releases this week, making the decision making for my pick a bit more difficult. Making the decision harder yet was the fact nothing really immediately stood out, with the week’s books all being good solid releases. So after some thought I eventually made my choice, and here you go.
Your pick this week is Dark Avengers #9. What really made this book climb to the top of my week’s books is one simple fact: when you get right down to it, this one is about fathers and sons, and the relationship that comes from that. The meat of this issue is about Ares and his son Phobos (of the Secret Warriors) relationship, and the truthfulness that comes through from it is emotional and honest. Ares’ reaction to his son’s choice of friends and Phobos life decisions ring very true to anyone who is a parent, and while the average reader of this isn’t exactly a god, I think everyone will get the emotion behind it. Any good parent wants what’s best for their child, and that includes Gods of War. It’s nice to see a writer able to put such heartfelt emotion into a script, and having a gifted artist like Mike Deodato be able to so capably render them is just a bigger plus. Coupled with a few nice Nick Fury bits and this one rose to the top of my stack this week.
There you have it folks, your pick for the week. I’ll see you back here next week, same time, same channel.
