The Ettatorial for the Week of 9-24-08

A decent sized week of releases this week made a pick/picks of the week difficult, and as such, three books out of a possible seven made the cut.
The first book this week is Avengers: The Initiative #17. I’ve said it many a time, this is easily one the best books Marvel publishes every single month. And now, I’m going to just have to say it, this is my personal favorite book from Marvel. Dan Slott and Christos Gage write the best Marvel Universe book every month and make it look easy. From using characters that range from A-listers to characters probably one guy remembers, they seem to get just how every single one of them works. And even with a fill-in artist this month (Harvey Tolibao-doing some fine pencil work, with work reminiscent of the likes of Steve McNiven and Whilce Portacio) this books just fires on all cylinders. This book is a must-buy every single month.
The second book this week is Captain America #42. This book marks the end of the Death of Captain America mega arc, and as such, is worthy of your attention. From the moment that Brubaker and Epting started this story-line, the attention focused on this book grew dramatically due to all the media attention that came with killing and replacing Captain America. I wondered how long the story would go, and if the creative team could keep such a high level of quality for the duration of the story. With this issue being the close of the story-line, I’m pleased to say, unequivocally, yes. The end presented here is logical, memorable, and keeps the high standards this book has had through-out the run. And now with this story done, I’m really looking forward to just where the book will lead now, as having a brand new Cap is going to open a lot of doors story wise, and I for one am anxious to see where they go.
The final book this week is Powers #30. After reading this, I thought that it was such a good wrap-up to all the events that this volume of Powers has been up to this point. And just as I sat down to write this, I read that Bendis stated at the Baltimore comic-con this very day that this issue is the end of Volume 2, and that the book will be re-launched with a new number one some time later next year. That all makes sense, as this issue seems like such a good place to leave the book. One could almost consider this a decent closure to the series itself, if one actually wanted to. For that very reason, and the fact the book seemed to be on a higher level creatively than it has been recently, this book is worthy of your attention.
So there you go folks, three great picks for you this week. I’ll see you back here next week, same time, same channel.
