Mass Effect 2 Launch Trailer
Let’s take a break from the mess that is NBC to talk about something good that will happen this year. Video Game part 2′s, starting with Mass Effect 2 are looking like they’ll kick all kinds of ass all year long.
I’m not the kind of guy who runs out and buys games on day one anymore, but everytime I see new Mass Effect 2 fotage I get all kinds of pumped up. Mass Effect was, in my opinion, the most well thought out video game universe I have ever seen. The story, detail and history of the game are better planned than many novels and the story telling itself is second to none. Even the music in this trailer is some of the best I’ve heard in a long time.

Ok, you talked me into it, but I’m still a little gun shy after assasins creed 2, (not that you talked me into it, but I was lured by your interest in it) really, that game isn’t that great. The idea is cool, and the open environment is cool, and the graphics are amazing, but way way too many glitches, bad camera angles, some absurdly stupid missions and crappy fighting system. Maybe I need a good FPS to get the bad taste out of my mouth, but I need to finish AC2 first, so by that time I might need some scope too in order to get that taste out of my mouth…
AC2 isn’t that great? OK, I lost you right there
It may not be what you expected, or wanted, but Assassin’s Creed 2 is, without a doubt, a high water mark for the year in games. The combat may not be the greatest, but it tries for something original and different, a brave move in a world of, “me too” shooters. And it really isn’t about combat. It’s about the perfect assassination. One where the enemy doesn’t even know you are there. Those are immensely satisfying.
It’s about a world that really feels alive. Never has a game captured a time and place so well, and such a unique time and place! Again, unlike all the, “me too” shooters set in world war II, or the Modern Warfare clones.
Don’t jump into Mass Effect expecting a great shooter. The shooter mechanics are solid as hell, but that’s not the point. The point is an amazing, engrossing story, investment in your character (and party’s) progression, and a truly vibrant Sci-Fi universe as rich as most novels.
I would agree with you about the combat not being part of it, and I think thats where they loose me. There are times where they force you into a 8 vs. 1 senerio, and it just feels clunky, and really bothers me, because the sneak assasination is really good and fun, and solid they should have just stuck with that, and evoved that further rather than trying to force it into something it’s not. Mostly I think we agree, the story is deep and interesting, and the world is like you said engrossing, but it just seems clunky in parts. I also can’t stand timed missions, especially when you have to deal with what I could consider less than perfect camera and controls. Don’t get me wrong, there are some very good parts to this game, I love the side stuff with the view points, and the town restoration, weapon upgradeds and other rpg elements etc. I’m just disappointed because I think I could have been better. Just because a game has a good story doesn’t excuse poor game play. I also agree the “me too” shooter is way way over done these days. BTW we quit final fantasy, thats why I have more time to play other games
