Buyers Beware: Current Blu-ray Players Won’t Correctly Play Future Discs

I have been ranting and raving about this for months on the Project Silence Podcast, but no one seems to listen to, or even believe, me. Now that Blu-Ray rep’s have openly admitted it and The Consumerist has picked up on it, maybe people will finally listen: YOU PEOPLE ARE GETTING SCREWED ON BLU-RAY.

    From The Consumerist:

Regarding current Blu-ray player owners, Blu-ray developers told BetaNews, “They knew what they were getting into.”

Representatives at the Blu-ray booth at CES told BetaNews that the PlayStation 3 is currently the only player they would recommend, due to upcoming changes to the platform. But Pioneer, Samsung, Panasonic and Sony have all been selling standalone Blu-ray players to customers.

So here’s how it’s going to work: current players are Profile 1.0, and can play future hi-def discs but no bonus stuff. Profile 1.1 dics will include additional bonus material that won’t play on 1.0 players—these discs will have a “Bonus View” sticker. Come October, Profile 2 capability will come to the market, which includes Internet activity, but only on Profile 2.0 players—these discs will have a “BD Live” sticker.

Sony continues to blame the fact that Blu-ray was unfinished at release on the early release of HD-DVD. Bad argument Sony, HD-DVD was a finished spec at release, when you feel behind you should have just given up. It’s not Toshiba’s fault they can deliver a finalized product two years before you can. For two years HD-DVD has supported all the features Blu-ray is just promising sometime in the future, if you buy a new player. It’s a crock of shit, and bad for the consumer, but because the average consumer didn’t do any research (unlike Jason and I), Blu-ray supporters deserve to get screwed. I’m sorry for being harsh, but it’s a fact.

It may not be to late, let WB and the other companies know we won’t stand for second rate over priced products. Let them know that we want a format that is finished and affordable, sign the petition for continued support of HD-DVD.

Honestly, if you were dumb enough to fall for the Blu-ray line, you simply have this coming. But don’t let WB and the other studios screw those of us who did the research and supported HD-DVD from the start, do the right thing and sign.
