Sony Finally Announces Finished Blu-ray Player, Plans to Over-Charge Continue
By Jay Alan | February 26, 2008
With the demise of HD-DVD, Sony has even less interest in lowering prices or selling a decent Blu-ray player. According to Engadget, Sony today announced two new models, only one of which will finally support new (old for HD-DVD owners) PiP special features. The finally finished BDP-S550 will at last be available this fall. What the f#ck is taking so long Sony? Toshiba had finished HD-DVD players out 2 years ago. Oh, and it will cost $500. Ouch. Guess it’s time to take on that second job, just so I can watch HD movies.
I continue to wonder why I have been, so suddenly, cast back to the year 2006, when it was impossible to watch HD media in the home, when for the last two years I enjoyed great quality HD-DVD’s with finished players and a full feature set. It’s a strange world we live in.
I also wonder what Sony’s designers are thinking, these Blu-ray players continue to be the ugliest DVD players on the market. I know it’s called Blu-ray, I don’t literally have to have a Blue player to remind me what format I own.
Update: Turns out Engadget was a bit off on their information. According to the actual press release, both of these players will support all of Profile 1.1 and 2.0 features. The BDP-s350 will be available in the spring for the only slightly outrageous price of $400.
