    Superman Returns

    By Jay Alan | June 28, 2006

Let me start by saying, I hate spoilers, and you will read none here.

I just got home from a late night viewing of Superman Returns. It’s hard to know exactly what to say about this film. It’s especially hard to put into words the feelings that this film elicited in me at my age. Suffice to say that Bryan Singer proves once again that he is a master of the cinema, plain and simple, the guy really gets movies, he really gets how to make you emotional in ways you never thought possible, and last, but certainly not least, he really, really gets Superman.

After the disappointment of the Star Wars movies and the enjoyment, but not sear joy, I experienced at Batman Begins, I didn’t think it was possible for my cynical old self to feel six years old again.

    Boy was I ever wrong.

Superman Returns made me feel like a kid again. It made me clap, cheer, and yes, even tear up on more than one occasion. What can I say? I like Batman, I really like Spiderman, but I have always loved Superman. There is something about the character that we really need. This world can really get you down, but something as simple as a fictional story about an adopted orphan can bring home the message of hope in ways that are hard to describe.

Was the movie perfect? Nah, but then what is. Some acting was a bit off (but not Brandon Routh, never him, he is perfect. He looks and sounds so much like a young Christopher Reeve it’s almost scary). CGI was fantastic, the best I have ever seen, but one moment with a young Clark could have looked better. But this is nit-picking. Superman had indeed returned, and this is the best, most emotional film I have seen in years.

The only downer of the night was the crowd. I usually avoid crowded theaters, but once in a while I just can’t wait and have to go immediately, crowd or no. Of course we sat in front of the only idiots in the theater who couldn’t shut up, or stop kicking my seat almost the entire movie. People like this should be shot. If you are one of these people, and you know who you are, show some respect, or just stay home, it isn’t that hard. These people, not piracy, are the real reason why people no longer go to the movie theater. Well that and the price gouging for popcorn. $10 for a small popcorn and small soda? Are you kidding me?

In the end this film is so powerful that at the end, during a quiet moment with no music or sound effects, even the loud mouthed idiots were so quiet you could hear a pin drop in that theater. That’s power.
