Back From Washington
I’m back from my recent trip to Washington DC and I have to say it was quite the experience.
The day before we left, I was packing all belongings to take on the trip. All was going well until I checked my camera (an admittedly aging Canon SD 100) to make sure it was ready to go. Lo and behold it was broken. No warning, it had been working perfectly a week before. The Sony developed CCD was going bad (even when I avoid buying Sony products, they still screw me somehow, I’m really starting to hate that company). Some quick research and I found that Canon will fix the CCD for free (even out of warranty), very nice of them, but the turn around of 10 days didn’t do me any good when I was leaving in 12 hours.
Luckly Best Buy was on the way and they happened to have a Nikon Coolpix L11 on sale for only a little over one hundred dollars. I didn’t want to spend the money, but I even less wanted to visit our nations capitol without at least some kind of decent photo snapper. I took the plunge with very little research. I have to say the L11 is an amazing little camera. It is intended for point and shoot use only, with very few manual controls. It’s a bit disconcerting at first, not having the control I’ve become used to on my Canon, but for the money this camera takes some excellent photos with no knowledge of photography technology. I was very impressed that a camera I had almost no control over (other than pointing and shooting) took better pictures than my SD 100 with advanced features. It’s not a replacement for your SLR, but it’s a great backup pocket camera.
Anyway, the trip was fun, but exhausting. Within a few days I had done everything I cared to and we actually came back a day early. Washington is a nice city and the people were amazingly friendly, but I’m really not a Big City guy.
I got some great photos that I’ll be adding to my Flickr over the next few days and weeks, so keep a look out.
Let’s all give Etta a big thanks for keeping the place running for a few days and only pissing off the Chinese slightly. I’ve actually got their ambassador on hold at the moment, so I better go calm him down and avoid World War III.
